About the book

In the depths of a harsh winter, following the death of their grandmother, Erica Calcott and her sister Beth return to Storton Manor, a grand and imposing Wiltshire house where they spent their summer holidays as children. When Erica begins to sort through her grandmother's belongings, she is flooded with memories of her childhood - and of her cousin, Henry, whose disappearance from the manor tore the family apart. Erica sets out to discover what happened to Henry, so that the past can be laid to rest, and her sister, Beth, might finally find some peace. Gradually, as Erica begins to sift through remnants of the past, a secret family history emerges; one that stretches all the way back to turn-of-the-century America, to a beautiful society heiress and a haunting, savage land. As past and present converge, Erica and Beth must come to terms with two terrible acts of betrayal - and the heart-breaking legacy left behind.

The Legacy is an unforgettable, deeply satisfying story that will stay with you long after the last page has been turned.

"Manipulative but grabbing"

by debbie gaunt on 30/08/2010

I had to finish this book, but I did feel thoroughly manipulated by the writer all the way through. It was as if she had read a book 'how to hook your audience and play with them'. I found this a bit insulting to her readers and a lacking in confidence on the part of the writer, as if simply telling the story wouldn't satisfy. She needed tricks of breaking the narritive and cutting it up in episodic pieces. I thought of recommending this to my book club, but decided againt as I know it would anoy readers inspite of the story.

"Amazing!"

by Lee on 28/08/2010

I was convinced I wouldn't like this book. I don't know why, but really didn't think I would. How wrong I was! This is an excellently written, beautifully moving read. I couldn't put it down. It's a real page turner, and had me gripped from start to finish. I loved the mysteries, and trying to guess how they snippets would come together. Every time I thought I had something worked out, we got new information and I realised I was completely wrong. Think I got the "twist" about two lines before all was revealed! Cannot recommend this book highly enough!

"Fantastic!"

by Karen Smillie on 22/08/2010

I really loved this novel and have since passed this to members of my family. My only disappointment was that I would have loved to have found out what happened to Magpie and Joe after Caroline arrived in England (without wishing to give away the plot!) I think this was a tricky loose end however!

I loved this book and although I was desperate to solve the "mystery" I would have happily read more! Will look out for future novels by this author!

"Fantastic"

by Zoe on 11/08/2010

This book is cleverly written and beautifully portrays the complexities of family relationships and the secrets that mould them. I would readily recommend this novel but I feel that as the story is based (basically) around two stories, at times one does over shine the other so I found myself rushing through it. Aside from this The Legacy is certainly a thought-provoking summer read.

I brilliant book, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

"A great saga!"

by Kathy Greethurst on 20/07/2010

I enjoyed this book. The story spans five generations of a family and tells of their dark secrets and the disastrous impact those secrets have on the family. It is set in Wiltshire (UK) in the past and the present and in the early years of the twentieth century in Oklahoma (USA). The book begins with two sisters, Erica and Beth arriving at a country house in Wiltshire that they have inherited from their Aunt Meredith, where they spent their summer holidays as children. This is important to know because the blurb is confusing. It mentions Oklahoma as the setting and not Wiltshire and so I assumed that the story was set entirely in Oklahoma. Also, it says at the-turn-of the-century, which means the turn of the twentieth century not the twenty-first century.

"Wow!!!"

by Caroline on 17/07/2010

I loved this book, I was worried that I was not going to enjoy keep going from past to present but I loved it! I would recomend this book to anyone!
