"Good enough to eat!"
by Mary Keane-Dawson on 29/07/2010
I simply loved this book, and could not get enough of it. The plot was intriguing and I really felt drawn into Ellie's world... I had previously read Kerrigan's Recipes of a Perfect Marriage, and was delighted with that book too. My mother even read both of them, which was great - as we had something to share that wasn't just chat about the kids!
"Excellent read"
by Ann Brien on 09/07/2010
I found this book great. I love the way Kate makes her characters come to life and you feel as if you know them and are part of it. Recommend it to everyone, treat yourself to a coffee and a great adventure. A book that you just can't put down.

A great summer read. You really become involved in Ellies life... you think she is making wrong life choices but then the wrong choice is the right one in the end as the story unfolds.
"A must have summer read"
by Jennie Scully on 29/06/2010
This story should be every woman's summer read. From the first few pages you feel involved and enthalled with the characters and the future events. I was almost afraid to put it down each day as I was closing the pages to their lives and all that was awaiting the amazing Ellie.

"Ellis Island"

This book grew on me. The writing is full of finely observed details of time and place, homesickness, fidelity, loyalty, duty, housekeeping- and fashion. As Ellie, struggles to decide how she wants to live, and faces up to the compromises her decision will demand, she by turns infuriates and inspires. Very satisfying.

Ellis Island is a truly enjoyable read. Kate has managed to bring the characters Ellie and John alive, so that you can picture them vividly in your mind. As usual Kate has captured the period detail to bring the story alive.
"Absorbing and thought provoking"
by Olivia on 22/06/2010
I was totally absorbed in this story and found that it made me question myself; if I was faced with the same choices as Ellie would I have made the same decisions? I like to think I would have but I can't be sure!

When you hear that a book is about a "rural Irish girl", you (well, I do) think, "Oh dear. Not another boring drag." Surprisingly, Ellis Island is nothing near a "drag". While reading it, you are drawn into Ellie's world, and the pictures that Kate paints; they stick with you. This is well worth your time, and you'll be impatiently waiting to find out what happens next.
